Into the Imagine Festival 2010 today: 1 – 3PM Imagine the Architecture of the Future
(the Imagine Festival 2010 calendar of events)
The Nicolas Schöffer’s Tower at CARP
Father of Cybernetic Art, a architect, visionair and artist, famous for his enlightened way of thinking and his architectural “cybernetic art” of moving and turning modules and mobiles using light and mirrors to create new forms of all kinds. In his time the 50-60-ties he was creating a totally new form of Art that he called “Cybernetic” and his work is displayed in many musea over the world. There are even several musea carrying his name and showing his art.
One of his biggest creations was his Tower of Light, what he designed for the city of Paris where it had to stand in a special surrounding where you could see it from far away.

Mirrors and lights were used to create the illusion, specially at night, to make the tower was like floating in the air.
Inside the tower all kind of exhibitions, theatres, cinema’s, restaurants and shops would entertain the visitors, rotating floors would give spectaculair vieuws and on certain times a lightshow would make the tower a performence of its own
Schöffer made a blueprint of his tower, did build maquettes, painted it and drew it many times. Just he was too visionary, the tower could not be build, there was no technique good enought to build the machines to controle all, so his tower remained but only on paper.
Schöffers widow Eléonore de Lavandeyra Schöffer kept his heritage and is still working to keep Schöffers work alive and vivid in many openings and many exhibitions about his work. Also on SL where she made herself a avatar and visited a exhibition in world.
This we she learned to know Velazquez Bonetto and CARP.
The contact remained and she liked the work of CARP and its creators very much and also learned what Velazquez was capable of…
Eleonore wrote a letter to Velazquez Bonetto and this is what she wrote:
“Agota told me that you could be interested in building the TLC on SL. It is a marvellous idea. I thought about it a long time ago. It would be fantastic if it could be done for the 100th anniversary of N.S. birth, and 20th anniversary of his death. 2012.
If you decide to do it, and I agree to the principle, (the modalities would have to be clearly precised together) their previous work could be of some help, and a meeting with you and them should be arranged as a second step. The first one being your trip to Paris, contact me, visit the atelier, and try together to put a wonderful dream… into reality.
So, you have to tell me if you can come to Paris one of these days, and when. Propose to me different dates, so that I can find one fitting with my work.
I am very VERY happy with your idea. No one could be able to realize it properly exept you. I already thank you.”
Eléonore de Lavandeyra Schöffer
So Velazquez Bonetto and Caravaggio Bonetto went to Paris RL, spend several days in the atelier and home of Schöffer with Eleonore explaining. Then he got the blueprints and made many pictures, went back home and started building the Tower.
AND ITS READY NOW………to see and experient in SL… to walk in and look around. its build on scale 1:1 that is a bit different then what we are used to in SL where we all build “bigger” because our avatars a bigger and taller as well. This is because we look from behind our avatar and not through the eyes of the avatar. Still the tower is a amazing piece of work, it will be a performence at itsself, Velazquez did build in a programm and controllers that let all the lights and particles perform in a lightshow automaticly or on command.
Seats with the audience will fly around with build in camera’s that offer spectacular views, because the tower is to big to see in all. Elevater seats bring you to the floors you chose, the exhibitions with cybernetic art show you what that is about. great artists did create specially for the tower all kinds of interactive, and scripted sculptures. Josina Burgess created immersive particles, lots of cybernetic sculptures and both they invited

Nicolas Schoffer “Show Surfaces” at The Lucien Herve Gallery “depo”

to add cybernetic works on the floors.
Special performences and small shows are there for your entertainment.
Its the dream of Schöffer, his tower to be build, and even better: its build in the virtual world, something he never would have thought would really become true! and Velazquez Bonetto did build it.
Cybernetics “is the interdisciplinary study of the structure of control and regulatory systems, circular, casual and feedback mechanisms, self-organization and system dynamics. «Cybernetics – derives from the Greek «kybernetes» meaning «steersman»; our word «governor» comes from the Latin version of the same word. The term cybernetics was first used by Norbert Wiener around 1948. In 1948 his book «Cybernetics» was subtitled «communication and control in animal and machine.» The term today refers to systems of communication and control in complex electronic devices like computers, which have very definite similarities with the processes of communication and control in the human nervous system.”

The final day will see a celebration event held RL at the Harbor Gallery and will stream live music into SL via the POP ART LAB sim.
Professor Gary Zabel (Georg Janick in Second Life) says of the event: “Two things inspired me to initiate ‘Through the Virtual Looking Glass.’ First I wanted to explore ways to break down the barriers that separate the real and virtual worlds by introducing virtual art to real world audiences. So much powerful art created in SL and other virtual worlds has been limited to rather small in-world audiences. We need to break it free of the confines of the virtual ghetto. The portal between the real and virtual worlds should allow art and audiences to pass through in both directions. Second I wanted to use the powerful networking capacities of SL to promote global artistic collaboration by developing a series of coordinated real world international art exhibitions. In addition to the Boston exhibition opening April 7, TTVLG exhibitions will be taking place over the next few months in France, Germany, Holland, Brazil, and Australia, each organized by leading figures in the world of virtual art. We have also developed a HUD that will allow SL residents to experience many of the artworks that are being exhibited in the real world galleries as well as participate in related musical and literary events. The organizers of TTVLG hope that these ‘crossover’ experiences will throw a spotlight on the power of virtual art to connect people across countries as well as worlds.”

IMPORTANT INFO – PLEASE READ
Through The Virtual Looking Glass LM/TP TOUR HUD
April 7, 2008 Ver. 002 – REV1 4.10.2010 REV2 4.12.2010
The TTVLG LM/TP TOUR HUD will make it super easy for you to move around the Second Life grid to access the exhibits.
Some definitions that may be helpful if you are new to Second Life
HUD = Head’s Up Display and in SL typically attaches to your screen and allows you to operate objects or stores nifty useful things like Landmarks.
Landmarks = These are destination points that allow you to “teleport” from one location to another.
Slurls = These are web based url destination points in Second Life — you can copy and paste a slurl into your chat and click on it and get a Landmark destination point or can copy and paste into your web browser and access interactive map with destination location.
Teleport = This is how you move from sim to sim in Second Life and can move short distances too as long as you have access to destination points via Landmarks or Slurls
Scripts = These are programming codes that make objects do stuff like rotate or give out landmarks, etc. If a sim or area of a sim has their land permissions set to No Scripts, avatars entering the sim/area will not be able to run scripted objects or HUDS that are attached to their avatar or screen.
Lag = this occurs when SL servers processors get hammered with incresaed activity such as complex scripts running on a sim along with scripted objects worn on avatars as well as the presence of many avatars on a sim. When Lag occurs, scripted objects like TTVLG kiosk buttons or the TTVLG LM/TP TOUR HUD may not respond right away. Be patient as the scripted object will eventually respond.
HOW TO USE THE HUD AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
TO GET STARTED:
** You probably have already received the TTVLG LM/TP TOUR HUD but in case not, grab one and please read below how to install and operate.
The HUDS are available in the large boxes outside the gallery and via the kiosks at the art locations.
** If a sim is experincing Lag, the TTVLG kiosks and boxes may take longer to deliver objects, notecards and the HUD.
Once you’ve received your HUD, locate the LM/TP TOUR HUD in your inventory — the HUD is called:
! Through The Virtual Looking Glass LM/TP TOUR HUD
Two ways you can attach the HUD to your screen
1) Left Double click on the name
2) Right click on the name and a drop down menu will appear — at the bottom you will see “Wear” – - left click on “Wear”
The LM/TP TOUR HUD will attach to the upper right hand corner of your screen.
Touch the “Through The Virtual Looking Glass” Title to open and close the “drop down” menu. You may need to touch the HUD twice to open drop down menu. Touching the HUD again will retract the menu — touching the HUD toggles it on / off (menu visible, menu not visible).
Touch the name/destinattion you would like to visit. A blue menu will ask if you wand to keep the Landmark — select keep.
A Landmark window will appear, select Teleport and off you go!
The Landmarks will be stored in your inventory so yoiu can revist the locations.
*** AREAS WHERE LM/TP TOUR HUD WILL NOT WORK:
Because some sims/exhibits have NO SCRIPTS turned on, the scripts inside the LM/TP TOUR HUD will not work. We have noted these exhibits by coloring the bacground panels RED on the LM/TP TOUR HUD.
Below you’ll find the lm’s slurls to all the exhibitions which you can click on via this notecard of slide into yoru inventory and click on it from there to tp to next location.
The locations marked with *** have NO SCRIPTS turned on their land options. Your HUD will not work at these locations. Select the next location in the list below to continue the tour.
