IMAGIN@RIUM: Merlino Mayo – “NATURAE”

“Naturae” literally means “of Nature”, born out of the root ‘natus’. Nature, the creative force, is also the forgotten matrix source, and is a system of natural laws which determine and control the entire universe and all of its elements and living beings.

Because of man being blinded by his technological prowess, this has now fallen into oblivion and become a shadow of the past but which now resurfaces unexpectantly from this hidden immortal line of continuity.
In this installation, Merlino Mayo follows this theme of Man having turned away from this integral  part of himself and who now turns and is again confronted by it. A meeting with Lex Naturae, with this shadow part, still ever present in our DNA (internal) and our environmental domain (outdoor), and that, as a latent virus, re-emerges in a disturbing way.

The path of “Naturae” starts with a solid and impressive sculptures such as: Life’s Lines – (Life Line), huge Ley Lines, etc. calling upon the visitor through a more active exploration into a dialogue with our existing environment and the surrounding seas, rocks and light.

Then at a higher altitude the installation changes through different levels within this enormous dream and the visitor will be overwhelmed by these elements in a purely symbolic, metaphysical, surreal and free exploration, where we can allow ourselves be safely and pleasantly lost.

The video installation will be part of the “IMAGIN@RIUM” which, together with those of other facilities of the MiC, will occupy a position at MACRO – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea in Rome.

IMAGIN@RIUM: Merlino Mayo – NATURAE

NATURAE 3rd ELEMENT WOOD photo by ChrisTower Dae

The Andy Warhol’s SILVER FACTORY my historical reconstruction 3d

On the last 23 November 2011, in Second Life at Solaris SIM opened the PAD, Pop Art Display, which I attended in my particular environmental reconstruction of the “Silver Factory”, the historic Loft laboratory in the period 1962-1968 in New York of Andy Warhol.
My work consisted first of all in a historical research documentation, necessary for the reconstruction, by collecting material on the network, through the vision of cinema films, documentaries and video, then watching interviews with the protagonists of the Factory. The first problem was to understand how the environment space was made in plan with its openings and main functions, such as windows, bathrooms, corridors, entrances, exits, warehouses, etc. but also in height, on the ceiling with its traditional arcades, supported by pillars, and not least the definition of what kind of finishing, coating materials were originally used.

One of the key issues was the total lack of current references, because the original factory no longer exists, all material available, even if present in large amounts, (I found more than 230 photos taken in internal and external profile of the very few glimpses of views from the road) this space was always in a rapidly changing, with characters moving furniture that were constantly moved and accumulated considerable material for construction work and/or artistic events or shooting on film sets, concerts or just for certain work phases of large amounts of paintings, instruments, wood works, paintings and serigraphs.
Finally there was a problem of “space” or geometric number available in the virtual environment, meaning that the geometry or rather the number of prims available, was severely limited for my work, and this required an additional effort for construction and true reconstruction of many pieces of furniture or tools, often present in photographs or historical movies more in the inworld mode “sculpted”, this process is a bit much more complex, it will considerably reduce the space of simple primitives used for a structure, but this requires additional effort in the reconstruction work phase.

At the end of the reconstruction work, I found a pleasant surprise during my researches, that never end with working progress, the little discover was a plan drafted by the photographer Billy Name of the Factory, a very intersting sketch map but eloquent on the number of pillars, the vaults, the exact location of services and other ports, all confirmed exactly the work carried out so far that in broad terms was remained susceptible to small changes as a slightly higher ceiling height, to facilitate movement of cam avatars and visitors, because it was also intended to be used in future like public environment for the exhibition of works by artists inworld, giving a certain vitality of proposals events to the PAD whole structure’s armony.

The overall design of the PAD and team work was ideated originally by Matteus Taurog (coordinator critic), Zorro Hirvi (builder structural), Eros Boa (builder for paints in 3D) and then built up in the last 2 months of works with my further contribution Merlino Mayo (artist builder of the Silver Factory) with my Alt Xaan Allen I was also cobuilder of structural and individual works 3d in the whole PAD building, much of which was removed by me and reconstructed by others, due to subsequent  wrong attributions rules concerning the final effective work done, in the official comunications notes and web press so after this I decided that my work was “officially” only focused on the single historical reconstruction of the Andy’s Silver Factory about which I am still proud of.

*notes of interest

* The first artist that comes to show at PAD was Rose Borchovski, Rose is the virtual alt of Saskia Boddeke and she is the creator of the Susa Bubble story. Here an old intersting interview with Rose from VirtualWorldsMagazine, she speaks about her talented art work.

** The first music event at PAD was the Concert Live by the very talented ENGRAMA group band, Lakua Arriaga (drums and song) and Pupito Helstein (guitar and song), with activity in Machinima examples too, so an intersting event to see how the atmosphere into the Silver Factory, could start and works, like a real art life progress of the structure and people, remembering the old original atmospheres with Velvet Underground perfoming in the real NYC Silver Factory. The Engrama concert have been thanks to the PAD officer Halixia Zenovka that found the group band and organized it, the event had a great partecipation with almost 100 presences and intersting polemics with Saveme Oh a well knowed artist in SLife.

*** The Virtual Silver Factory at PAD was visited from the avatar Bibbe Oh in Real Life Bibbe Hansen a real goers with her father Al Hansen of the  Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory in the 60s. She confirmed that general atmosphere and many details were correct.

**** The PAD Pop Art Display Project was also officially presented in Real Life in the last ARS IN ARA 2011, Social Media Week convention in Rome – Italy. at the presence of: Carlo Infante, Umberto Croppi, Francesca Barbi Marinetti, Fabio Fornasari, Paolo Brenzini, Marco Longo, Gianni Panconesi who presented PAD, Massimo Melica, Adelchi Battista,  Giovanni dalla Bona, Luca Spoldi, Ariella Risch of illycaffè, Patrizia Nofi. Pirats La Criee Art Gallery, SAS La Rochelle my permanent installation on the walls

English

The last october-november 2010 I was really happy to be called to give my contribute of a new Gallery for Pirats “La Criee  Art Gallery”, SAS La Rochelle with a permanent installation outside in the walls and water, roof, ect.
So when I work on a new installation, my usual procedure is, if possible, to adapt to the situation that I find on the site. I think it is important that the artist try to find a form of dialogue, where possible, with the site, its present activities, etc.. trying to maintain my style and my intrinsic message that I want to give, to tell, at the time with my installation. Here is exactly what happened, and for the friendship and above all respect I feel for the work and the great contribution they give to the art making in the virtual worlds of Second Life, Nathalie Gobé (merlina.rokocoko) and Jean-Marc Larroque (Newbab Zsigmond) with the Pirats staff. I have been pleased and honored to leave my little sign and contribution art.

The installation tells a story to which I always keep a lot, because it is deeply tied to the meaning and the birth of my men, particularly blacks and red. There is a starting point and an ending, the story of a conquest or rather the moment when men blacks are trying to conquer the man of Fire, power, the red giant at the top of the In this case the roof, the most high part of the building.
The scene consists of many sculptures men located so as to give just the idea of action in motion, with their apparent reproduction is always the same but in various differents positions and sometimes even of different sizes. The study of the various points of view is always very important to me, and therefore the overall effect of the resulting benefit, as the final result on the observer. So to give some examples, the red man who represents the power of Fire, located at the top that is imposed on the observer is below, above it, and this effect I have emphasized my blacks shrinking slightly closer to the Red. This has created a technical problem that prompted me not to use the sculpt and to replace men made of simple prims, well with small and simple prims, numerically more heavy for the final bill, but much more stable and precise for correct viewing.

Otherwise, another point of view by the water, should give the idea of moving and confused crowd, a mass, a silent and stealthy army in the night is the best time to attack the stronghold of man’s power of Fire Red . In this case, I paid much attention to the position of every black man, trying to make the outlook is seen from the water front, almost seemingly confused, to multiply and maximize the effect of a mass movement, an army of men ant in the perpetual motion of the instantaneous photograph in three-dimensional sculpture.

Finally, the genesis of action in this case is in the water, which is dear to me, it is ideal to set against the end with the opposite and complementary element of fire. The general idea that early attention is that of propagating random and natural, where you can sense a movement, asymmetrical, natural, remember that the manual is the man who seemingly chaotic and random nature of that in my philosophical view is contrary to what appears a Cosmos in the Chaos.

Another event, therefore, that once again showcases such creative and valuable contributions and also that great spirit of cooperation that makes the metaverse so unique, without which it would be impossible to bring to life  events of this magnitude.

We thank all those who helped to prepare this “Roman Carnival” (Carnevale Romano) in Second Life: Patrizia Blessed, Rumegush Altamura that are the heart of the MiC, Van Loopen who has worked hard to contact the musicians and stream management, to Cristal Triellis, to Xaan Allen who with his horse “Merlino” is the protagonist of the poster in SL Style, and thanks to all those who  have given their time to the success of this event.

I was at Digital Cafe’ – RAI (ON AIR) into the Expo “Piu’ Libri Piu’ Liberi” talking about big art events into Virtual Worlds

*traduci questo articolo in italiano

5 /12/2010  ” Digital Cafe’ “ RAI Italian Television (ON AIR) into “Piu’ Libri Piu’ Liberi” Expo, talking about big art events into Virtual Worlds

The 5 december 2010 as active artist Merlino Mayo I was invited to talk about big art events into virtual worlds,  it was an intersting talk show at the RAI italian national television Digital Cafe’ conducted from Marina Bellini aka Mexi Lane, into the Expo Piu libri e piu’ Liberi of little and medium Italian Editors at Rome EUR historic ‘Palazzo dei Congressi‘ building, with other remarkable instersting guests, the President of Commission Culture of Rome Federico Mollicone, Francesca Barbi Marinetti the niece of  Filippo Tommaso Marinetti founder of the historic Futurism art mouvement from the 1920, the artist Marco Manray aka Marco Cadioli, and a long interview with Bryn Oh, and Maryva Mayo, Cristina Cilli, Patrizia Nofi, Talete Flanagan, ect.  So I was proudly able to talk as inworld artist and witness, to describe the history of Burning Man (event in real life) the Burning life and the Burn2 and others big events where I take active part like Imagine Festival from Yoko Ono with CARP Nicolas Schoffer’s Tower, or Through the virtual looking glass a bridge between SLife art events and RLife art galleries events so the importance of these kind of events for the virtual worlds Art evolution.

The experience at the Burn2.0 of 2010 was very interesting. There were many unknowns at the beginning of the event in large part to the disappointment of many artists and exhibitors who were waiting with great anticipation each year of the former event Burning Life (last 2009) to say the least pharaonic, with the beauty of 32 islands sim granted use directly from Linden Lab still remember like it was yesterday, the moment when I discovered this show late last year, and I was incredulous to discover the magnificence and the infinite complexity of an virtual event, but perfectly comparable for interest, creativity, energy and commitment, to a great and glorious international expo into real life.
That summer I decided to do something to bring to the attention of most people as possible the existence of this incredible event, even outside the virtual world, I could not bear the thought that all this be ignored by the world of so-called real life. And I remember even as a joke that I began to photograph everything, all these installations and trying to mark the names of individual builders and artists, changing the appropriate lighting for each work, etc. To give only a vague idea of the crazy idea,  I was taking pictures for almost 10 days, and a quantity ‘of shots near the end of 3500, of course to select, cause I shot it in various circumstances with different lights, but a quantity remarkable at least for my standards. I mention this fact to make you understand the complexity of this event, and I can say that in these cases you can really understand that every visitor is going through a subjective experience different from others but from himself in time when which returned to more logical route randomly changing times.

This year there was a change of course, and after all the internal debate among the organizers, former founding event of the Black Rock Rangers and the same Linden Labs, has created a new situation of self-sufficiency, in which and they had to ask for help all the participants, this has generated a great distrust and a hard reconstruction of credibility of the event. The unknown many have decided not to participate, and therefore do not contribute, and then you have already reached the remarkable result of six islands in Second Life sim, which in any case have been a great achievement, and you and ‘seen slowly in the days of organizing to get big names of famous artists such as Bryn Oh, AM Radio, Maya Paris, Wizard Gynoid, Gracie Kendal, and others. For people like me who had already ‘at work on her small lot, this was a great joy, cause you kept believing in the event of the burn, related to famous historical event in the real life Burning Man.
It is the end result was a large concentration of high quality and densely populated with events, complex three-dimensional structures, moving lights and colors, content and ideas of great interest and great wealth and inspiration.
The event is for those who participate, not just a great chance ‘of visibility’ and showcase to the world inside the metaverse, the outer one for real life, and for observers inworld, gallery owners, researchers, editors, bloggers, owners, rangers, event organizers and the artists themselves, etc.
Personally I found enormously stimulating experience, I made friends with several artists in the first did not know existed and which are now in close contact and great confidence. All this for a creative but not only, is a treasure and a priceless opportunity ‘for personal improvement and development only.
The burn2.0 has exceeded expectations and pessimistic forecasts, with impeccable organization and a ‘was set up in no time, because of the previous debate concluded shortly before. Represented in each case a point of continuity ‘with the glorious past, and I really hope he can evolve in future editions with even more’ great results.
I thank all participants and I hope to meet again in 2011.
